The European Dream

Just finished reading a fairly fabulous book called The European Dream by Jeremy Rifkin. He's an American with v agreeable views on Europe. Anyway, thought the last few lines were worth sharing:
"Much of the world is going dark, leaving many human beings without clear direction. The European Dream is a beacon of light in a troubled world. It beckons us to a new age of inclusivity, diversity, quality of life, deep play, sustainability, universal human rights, the rights of nature, and peace on Earth. We Americans used to say that the American Dream is worth dying for. The new European Dream is worth living for."

Love to all,
xx

ps - on a slightly lighter note; if you haven't seen Pride&Pred yet then I recommend you go see it. I saw it last night and despite it being overdubbed in German, thought it was wunderbar! The only negative I could think of was the lack of Mr Darcy emerging from the lake, but you get to see him walking across a field at dawn instead, so all is not lost! Plus, Mr Bingley is über cute in this one too :-)

Have been leaned on by big sister to reply to you. Can only say that I have been working hard, no half terms in the NHs and have been phoning regularly so you shouldn't feel too neglected. Also ongoing probs with upstairs computer and have to use Bob's and annoy him by asking too many questions re IT. Also feel that I'm not reassured to hear about all of your escapades so may stick to the censored phone version. Hope this arrives! mum xxx

What is Deep Play?

According to Rifkin, the European Dream emphasises "deep play over unrelenting toil". Think it is the 'work to live' mentality, as opposed to the 'live to work' one commonly associated with American culture. But I could be wrong...

Oh and thanks for the message Mama. And just so you know, I haven't been feeling neglected, just don't want you to miss out on the blogging fun. Oh and as to the disfunctional computer upstairs, replace it!!! I'd suggest a Mac :-)

Glad to hear that Lucy is offering to replace her Mama's computer. So generous...
Never mind Mr. Bigley - Donald Sutherland walks away with all the prizes for everything - as usual!! However, strongly suspect that his air of long-suffering has been learned from close observation of Big Bad Dave!
Glad Little Sis has come on board. Lucy-she's only in a cross mood at the prospect of having to work some weekends! Welcome to the real world Sis...........
Love to all

bloody cheek! I've done lots of weekends in my time but the point is that I work full time from Monday to Friday as well! Why are people being anonymous? Come on and show yourselves. Thanks for the offer of a new computer - maybe for Xmas? You could go halves with your money earning big brother! Two nights running with technology - will have to go for a lie down. xxx

Not too sure who anonymous is, but feel they may be mixing up Deep Play with a movie of a similar name, which gave The Lord Chancellor a bit of a headache several decades ago!
Glad Jane is on board, 'cos I don't feel as if I'm the oldest hippy in town any more......
