An Ode To Bec

There once was a girl from Oz
And we called her ace because
She made Fulda great
And was a fab mate
And now she's gone back to Oz...

Fulda will not be the same without you Bec. Fulda, ICEUS and the Fuldamentalists miss you. Make sure you make it back, okay?
All the best for your future adventures,

Champions :-)

Wow, not sure I've ever seen an FA Cup Final like that before. Both teams seeming to have forgotten how to defend, neither team seeming to care too much about conceding. A ridiculously open game for a cup final and well, it was end to end stuff from the start to the finish. Admittedly West Ham were the better team for the most part of the 90 mins - Xabi had apparently forgotten how to play football during his injured spell, Kewell couldn't get in the game and even Stevie G made a few mistakes. Carragher's own goal was definitely not the start Liverpool wanted and a second goal by West Ham brought a cloud of depression over our section of the Irish Pub in Frankfurt. Alas, with Liverpool nothing is ever easy and it took going 2-0 behind to get them to start playing decent football. Anyway, before we knew it it was 2-2 and we were happy again. Then a fairly ridiculous goal put West Ham in front AGAIN and it took a wonderstrike from Stevie G in the 91st minute to win extra time. Extra time was rather comical as both teams had used all their subs and all players were exhausted (except one West Ham player who looked disturbingly like Gary Neville from 10 yrs ago) and it became normal to see players suddenly fall on the ground with cramp. One West Ham player injured his ankle and could hardly walk, never mind kick the ball. Lucky for Liverpool, it was him who West Ham's last gasp chance to win the game came to - 12 yards from the goal, the injured ankle made contact but the ball bounced off and went wide. Penalties it was and Reina's previous goalkeeping errors were soon ancient history as he made 3 saves and won the cup for Liverpool. Ah, what a match. It was exhausting, a rollercoaster ride and definitely worth the trip to Frankfurt :-) The Indian food at lunch was also very pleasing and it was tres cool to be in the big city, in an Irish pub and amongst British people... Fun times.

Pictures and Few Words

I don't really have anything to say. Not feeling particularly inspired on the word front - think the homework I've just done killed all that. Anyway, I have pictures to share so I am going to follow Firdavs' lead and let the pictures do the talking. Most are from when Dad, My and Kate came to Deutschland, but there's also one of me, fellow ICEUS peeps and two random kids during an afternoon of footie fun - I got it from the ICEUS blog but wanted to reproduce it, partly because it's a cool pic, but admittedly also to prove that I'm not as lazy as people often believe me to be. Enjoy xx

Liverpool 2-1 Chelsea

What a beautiful day. Liverpool's deserved victory over Chelsea in the FA Cup semi final was not only a very sweet victory, but also a very good moment in a very good day. A 6am start. A 4hr train ride to Karlsruhe that passed without tedium. An Indonesian Sportsfest with a lot of Indonesians and only two non-Indonesians (me and a German guy - slightly bizarre feeling). Scrummy Indonesian food. Ragil rocking the basketball court. A leisurely walk around Karlsruhe in the sunshine with Ragil, his sister, Atiek, and his 3yr old nephew. Ice cream in the sunshine and holiday-esque feelings. A run to the station and dismay at missing the train. Beer in the sunshine whilst waiting for the next train. A train to Mannheim. To the Irish pub for the game - Liverpool, Liverpool, Liverpool - enjoyably watched on the BBC. Train to Frankfurt. Maccie D's and lots of weirdos. Train to Fulda. Bedtime.

An Ode To Spring

Oh, to be in England
Now that April's there,
And whoever wakes in England
Sees, some morning, unaware,
That the lowest boughs and the brushwood sheaf
Round the elm-tree bole are in tiny leaf,
While the chaffinch sings on the orchard bough
In England—now!

And after April, when May follows,
And the whitethroat builds, and all the swallows!
Hark, where my blossomed pear-tree in the hedge
Leans to the field and scatters on the clover
Blossoms and dewdrops—at the bent spray's edge—
That's the wise thrush; he sings each song twice over,
Lest you should think he never could recapture
The first fine careless rapture!
And though the fields look rough with hoary dew,
All will be gay when noontide wakes anew
The buttercups, the little children's dower
—Far brighter than this gaudy melon-flower!

[Home Thoughts From Abroad, Robert Browning]

Behold, Spring is here :-) This poem often springs to mind (if you don't mind the pun!) when Spring arrives. Largely because I always remember the wrong words and think it starts 'Oh to be in England, now that Spring is here' but it still fits the occasion. The occasion is in fact not me missing Spring days back in England (April showers is a very British concept, that thankfully doesn't seem to exist in Germany, wohoo!), rather I am feeling very 'springy' (in the seasonal sense of the word.) Yes, trees that have looked dead for the past few months are starting to show signs of life again, buds are growing on bushes and flowers are everywhere. Plus, in case nature's contribution were to prove insufficient, there has also been some human contribution to this lets-enjoy-spring feeling. In one week there has been football on the field (hugely enjoyable and justified post-football beer a treat) not once, but twice, 4 aside footie with six 7yr old obnoxious little German boys (we sure showed them) and then, to compensate for excessive activity, strawberries and ice cream, ice cream without strawberries and beer in a beer garden.

All that's missing is a bit of lawn tennis with strawberries and cream and some champers on ice for the spectators. Ah, now that would be the perfect Spring :-) Until that little fantasy of mine becomes reality, I will continue perfecting my McManamanesque footie skills and stuffing my face with ice cream. Nice job if you can get it :-)
